In January 1952, Trinity Lutheran Church in downtown Lewiston voted to sponsor the building of a mission church in the Orchards. Construction of a small chapel with Sunday School facilities was begun, and an Intern Pastor, called by Trinity, began the task of developing the Orchards congregation. The first worship service was held October 26, 1952, with 31 members who transferred from Trinity.
In 1954, the first full-time pastor was called. The ranch-style parsonage was constructed the same year. On May 3, 1959, ground was broken for the building of what is now the sanctuary. The first worship service was held in the new sanctuary on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1960. A kitchen, more Sunday School rooms, and expanded Fellowship Hall were added in the summer of 1962.
Grace became part of the America Lutheran Church in 1960. In 1988, the American Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church in America, and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches merged to become the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The ELCA is a member of the Lutheran World Federation and Lutheran World Relief.
The Grace Lutheran Kindergarten began operations in September of 1963. Grace Lutheran Preschool began operations after kindergarten was added to the Lewiston School District. Currently there are four classes of twelve children each.
A fire destroyed the Fellowship Hall and severely damaged the rest of the building in July 2011. Members returned to the building in May of 2012 with the addition of ADA bathrooms and a wheelchair lift.
